Youth Discovered Dead After Untrue Accusations of Stealing Ashes
A teenage youth was found dead only a few days following being falsely accused of taking the ashes of a dead infant during a burglary, an inquest has learned.
Heartbreaking Finding
The young boy's mother and father discovered his remains in his room at his Flintshire home on November 19th, 2021.
False Allegations Start
The investigation heard how his mother got a communication on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a woman asking if Kai was her child. The communication stated: "Tell him thanks for burgling my apartment."
In a testimony read to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the woman had been in the media, claiming her infant's ashes had been stolen in a burglary - a allegation which was false.
Law Enforcement Investigation
An investigation report from police later concluded the alleged break-in victim had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that the items was never stolen in the first place".
News coverage about the supposed taken remains generated social media comments, and although Kai was not identified in the posts, his parent said individuals "understood it was him".
The "online posts were extremely upsetting", she said.
Mental Health Impact
She added that her son had been identified with moderate ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' opinions genuinely were important to him.
"This must have affected him severely," she said, "particularly when this was not true".
Kai was arrested at his residence, but no evidence was discovered. He was taken to a police station and later released pending further inquiry.
Police said they would be in touch, the hearing heard, but had failed to contacted the family by the time of his death.
Withdrawal and Worry
His parent said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the police", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like much longer".
When she spoke to him about the supposed incident, she said her son informed her he had gone into the house because the woman who lived there had said he could use the bathroom whenever he wanted, but refuted taking anything.
Online Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her husband, the mother said her child was being harassed digitally after the allegations.
The proceedings learned that one young adult urged Kai to kill himself.
She had no concerns on the night before he passed away, explaining how she had listened to him "chuckling and joking".
She described him as a "caring, affectionate" young man, and said her "family is totally shattered".
He had been "clearly concealing his concerns", she stated, adding that he could not stand to have anybody "think bad of him".
School Reaction
The hearing heard from educational staff at Connah's Quay secondary school.
On November 8th, she "heard some students discussing that Kai had been arrested and that was the initial I learned".
"He told me... he'd was innocent," she added.
After the conversation, the educator said she called Kai's family telephone and provided a voicemail saying she had spoken to Kai about the allegations.
The court learned his parents said they did not got that message.
Formal Conclusion
Senior investigator informed the hearing he would wait for documents regarding what improvements had been made to handling suspects with ADHD, before deciding whether he should make a prevention of future fatalities report.
Delivering a narrative finding, he stated: "Around 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against the teenager, a young child.
"Probably untruths were afterwards embellished and exaggerated through the medium of online networks.
"On November 11th, he was questioned by the authorities and after his interview he was freed while inquiries continued."
The coroner determined: "Exists no evidence that the acts or omissions of any organization led to or contributed to his passing and although it was the outcome of a personal act it is not possible to determine his intent."
